Chapter 10
Luca
Walking through town holding Magnusâs hand feels like a dream. People clear out of our way, as if royalty is passing through. I guess in a way thatâs what Magnus is here.
âI have a weird question.â
Magnus smiles. âAsk away.â
âWhat do you do for money? I noticed we didnât pay for our food.â
âOh, we donât use currency here since every need is provided for.â
I nod. âCool. What about the stuff you get from my world?â
âWe have small amounts of currency from around the world. As far as the items we procure, we have our methods.â He winks, reminding me for just a moment of the jolly man who delivers gifts around the world.
Before we can make it back to the hill leading to his home, Faugor and the other elves come barreling out of the workshop, their faces covered in soot, their hands waving away smoke as they cough.
We, along with most of the town, hurry in that direction.
âWhat has happened?â Magnus asks, clearly alarmed.
Faugor coughs, glancing at the building with smoke billowing from the windows. âThe workshop is on fire, sir.â
Magnus runs toward it, and Iâm right behind him. When we enter, itâs easy to see there is no fire, but there is smoke coming from an unknown source. I follow Magnus as he takes the stairs two at a time. We split up at the top, each checking the machines, until I find the problem.
âMagnus.â
He rushes over to me, staring down at the quickly dissipating smoke. âWhat theâ¦â His eyes narrow as he kneels. âThis is magic.â His expression hardens. âLuca, my darling, would you please go to my home and wait for me? I have something to take care of.â
âYou know who did this?â
âI have a suspicion. The good news is there is no fire. The elves can get back to work.â
He stands, towering over me, and I step closer. âYou donât have to do anything alone, Magnus. Iâm here if you need me.â
His features soften, his eyes twinkling. âI do need you. Desperately.â He cups my face. âBut this is something I have to handle myself.â
âI understand.â
Magnus leans in and kisses me softly before pulling me closer and deepening the kiss. His size envelops me, and for once in my adult life, I feel small and protected. I also feel like falling to my knees and getting him out of those clothes.
Magnus breaks the kiss, pressing our foreheads together as we share breath. âI will return to you as soon as possible.â
âIâll be waiting.â
I make my way back to his home, wondering what heâs going to do about the smoke magic. It seems more than a little odd that two things have gone wrong since Iâve been here. Iâm no detective, but if I was a betting man, Iâd say theyâre related.
Inside the house, I wander through it, taking in all of Magnusâs treasures, from art pieces to sculptures to jewels. In my world this stuff would be priceless. Speaking of⦠I plop down on the sofa and pull my phone out of my pocket, wondering if I have reception wherever Iâm at.
